My friend Paul Gallagher observed that this tune has a more coherent, linear storyline than almost all my other stuff, and he’s right. I chose “Maggie” as the gal’s name in a nod to “Maggie Mae,” a story song that was inescapable when I was in college and was etched into memory. (I always loved the mandolin.) This narrator is stuck in a familiar musician’s dilemma: road band versus girlfriend. The choice of Canada as setting reflects my love of that country, where I go each year for a week of fishing.
