This song started as a melody in my head that I sang for months before words emerged. The song evolved with a gospel feel, like “Wayfaring Stranger”—the narrator is alone and calling out for help. Water often finds a way into my tunes, and being swept down a tidal river to the sea is intended as a metaphor for that feeling of dread when you think you’re abandoned and headed somewhere big, scary, unknown.
