Growing up in Pittsburgh, I used to watch barges (Bargin') run (down) the Monongahela River (the Mon), carrying the waste product from the steel mills (slag) to a dumping ground downriver. This is the story of a slightly-rough-around-the-edges, hard-working, under-appreciated guy who works on a barge. I always thought of it as a Movie of the Week kind of story: The main character fantasizes blowing it all off and commandeering one of the barges with his friend Jimmy, and just heading down to New Orleans and (hopefully) a better life. gk
