I worked hard on the chord progression to this one. It has a lot of minors, some sevenths in odd places, and a key change on the bridge. As I was writing it, I’d work myself into a corner and have to find the right note or chord—the right puzzle piece—to complete the pattern, and I think the end product works pretty well in that regard. Nothing autobiographically significant about the choice of city—never had a lover who split for Baltimore. It’s just sings well. Randy wrote most of the second verse.
